My take: OBDLink MX+ is the one I would start with for drivers who want flexible software and responsive live data. Enhanced diagnostics are valuable but remain make, model and year dependent.

What makes MX+ different

OBDLink positions the MX+ as its cross-platform Bluetooth adapter for iOS, Android and Windows. The included OBDLink app supports standard diagnostics and enhanced OEM add-ons for supported North American vehicles. It can also work with compatible third-party apps, which is the product’s defining advantage.

Reasons to consider it

  • Strong live-data orientation
  • Third-party app compatibility
  • Included enhanced add-ons for supported makes
  • Compact wireless hardware

Reasons to skip it

  • OEM coverage is not universal
  • App costs can vary
  • No built-in screen
  • Not a universal active-test tool

MX+ vs. cheap ELM327 adapters

The value case is reliability, speed, power management and supported software—not merely the ability to retrieve a P-code. A bargain adapter may read basic codes, but enthusiasts logging multiple parameters or leaving an adapter installed should care about connection behavior and battery protection.

MX+ vs. BlueDriver

BlueDriver offers the more guided, unified diagnosis experience. MX+ offers the more configurable platform. If you want repair reports and fewer decisions, choose BlueDriver. If you want dashboards, logs and app choice, MX+ is the better fit.

Who should skip it?

Skip it if you want a standalone handheld, guaranteed access to one specific module without checking coverage, or broad bidirectional testing. Those are different product categories.

Before you buy

Does OBDLink MX+ read ABS codes?

It can access OEM-specific diagnostics on supported vehicles. Confirm the vehicle and module in OBDLink’s coverage documentation.

Can it stay plugged in?

OBDLink markets battery-protection and sleep behavior, but users should still follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance.

Is the included app enough?

For standard diagnosis and supported OEM add-ons, often yes. Specialized dashboards or vehicle platforms may benefit from compatible third-party apps.
